A typical custom development brief arrives as a technical drawing, a target price, and a launch window. Between that starting point and a finished product on the shelf sits a path with well-known stages, and most delays come from skipping one of them rather than from any single supplier failure.
Stage one: a specification factories can build
The drawing is rarely the specification. Materials, tolerances, finishes, and test expectations all need to be written down in terms a factory can quote against. This stage decides the quality of every later conversation: a precise specification turns supplier answers into comparable offers instead of optimistic estimates.
Stage two: sampling with documented revisions
First samples exist to be wrong in useful ways. Each round is reviewed against the specification, the requested changes are documented, and the next round is checked against that revision list. When the approved sample finally exists, it carries a paper trail that removes ambiguity about what production must deliver.
Stage three: production that matches the sample
The production run is monitored against the approved sample, not against memory. A first-article check confirms the run starts right, in-line checks keep it right, and a pre-shipment inspection confirms what actually goes in the box. Delivery then follows the same discipline: documents prepared early, freight booked against the plan, and arrival scheduled before the launch window rather than into it.
None of these stages is glamorous. Together they are the difference between a launch story and a lesson learned.
